Revisiting Literacy Across the Disciplines

Literacy is  the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world.

-National Literacy Trust

We know that literacy instruction is not exclusive to those teaching ELA or ELD. In fact, the strategies and skills developed in ELA or ELD classes are often useful across contexts and subject areas. In this sense, all of our students are ongoing language learners.

When it comes to supporting literacy instruction through a UDL lens, there are three areas worth diving into: understanding across languages, domain-specific vocabulary and symbols, and fluency and automaticity.
