Designing an Inclusive Literacy Environment
How can the Learning Environment be designed to support access and agency for all?
The learning environment can serve as a powerful mechanism in design. The goals, means, methods, and materials all lay the foundation for an inclusive literacy environment where all learners can have access and agency.
The Far North teachers considered these different aspects of lesson design through the lens of each of the UDL principles: engagement, representation, and action & expression. The teachers reviewed and shared with one another useful strategies that can help reduce barriers in the learning environment. Expanding their toolkits, teachers left with ideas for strategies and design considerations that they would like to keep, those they would like to stop, and new ideas they would like to start.
